Kate Carr is a London-based sound artist and composer working across performance, composition and installation. Her practice explores the ambiguities of field recording, particularly the shifting boundaries between environmental sound, performance and sonic fiction.

Increasingly, Carr works with collected and discarded objects as instruments and performance tools. She builds idiosyncratic sound-making devices from everyday materials and performs with objects ranging from bird horns, frog rattles and watering cans to massage guns, rubber bands and hand-built noise boxes. Through these materials she blurs field recording with live foley, exploring how apparently documentary soundscapes can be constructed, performed and reimagined.

Her wider practice investigates sound as relational, attending to the interactions, movements and forms of collectivity through which environments are produced. She also develops recording protocols and sonic transects that use scores, constraints and repeated actions to structure encounters with places.

Carr performs internationally and runs the sound art label Flaming Pines. In 2022 she founded Rubbish Music with Iain Chambers, a duo creating and performing soundscapes entirely from discarded and repurposed objects.
