Markus Hetheier, producing and performing as Industries, is an electronic musician, arts worker and researcher originally from Völklingen, a post-industrial town in Germany, and based in Manchester since 2017. The name Industries holds both places, and their industrial histories, together. His practice unfolds across three interconnected strands. The first is DIY electronic music production and performance: left-field electronica made in a bedroom studio, layering field recordings with synthetic textures and beats, released independently and performed live. The second is mentoring, curation and promotion: in 2021, Hetheier co-founded FLUFF with Norrisette, a DIY queer electronica night that has grown into a self-sustaining community of over 100 musicians, with the pair working as collaborators, co-curators and mentors to the artists they support. The third is sonic mapping, comprising soundwalks, field recordings, soundscape composition and soundmap drawing, used as a tool for community building through shared listening and collective making. This methodology underpins his practice-based PhD at the School of Digital Arts (SODA), where it is used to map queer experiences of the city with research participants, culminating in a collective digital soundmap and exhibition.
