Jez riley French: Choreographies of Perception

  • Anthony Burgess Foundation Cambridge Street Manchester, England, M1 5BY United Kingdom (map)

Borders in the arts always puzzled me. They still do. Whilst there have been significant developments in the Sound Arts in recent decades, many of which I am fotunate to have been an active part of (as an artist, microphone builder, workshop leader, researcher and curator), the act of listening itself is still too often bordered. Further, whilst historical biases are being addressed, the systems that often created or maintained them remain intact. Taking examples from several projects involving forms of sensing central to my work, such as extended technologies, durational and micro listening to sounds often outside of our (human) attention, in this informal talk I will discuss listening as a constant questioning of perception, conventions, faulty histories and the self.
