Scald
SCALD is the experimental alias of London-based Derek Szeto, designed around collaboration with dancers, live instrumentalists and vocalists to push creative boundaries with darkly beautiful visuals, noise, and massive sub-bass soundscapes. His work embodies coexisting extremes—light/dark, grace/violence, tranquility/rage—rapidly shifting between calm and storm while transcending both. Formed to collaborate deeply with live performers, SCALD blends fierce improvisation, distortion, and abstract beat structures, working alongside artists including Luxul, SWARMM, Eden Grey, and Mick Harris. Recent projects involve motion-sensor generated sound and visuals with dancers like Xenia Black, Laboranta and Black Arrows. Asphyxia emerged from 2020 lockdown isolation, channeling uncertainty and angst into a desolate virtual landscape. The piece maintains fragile melodic beauty and string work while encasing it in hyperviolent beats and noise blasts. Scald's highlights include Desonanz Festival (Macedonia), Glastonbury, and WeSA / Sonic Bloom (Seoul) where they shared a lineup with Suzanne Ciani, Ryoichi Kurokawa and Nonotak.
